Hey, today I found this picture of the space shuttle “Endeavour”. If you look really close you can see an ipod in the window! This is so awesome that an ipod is in space, the shuttle probably has a supply of oxygen so the ipod should work fine, but this just begs the question dose an ipod work in space? With no oxygen, the ipods screen and circuitry shouldn’t work right… or will it? Because it is an electrical device it should run without oxygen? But then will the pressure of space kill it?
I will let you go “mmmnnnn” for a wile with this one!
Thanks for reading,
Brian

What has oxygen got to do with it? Living things need oxygen - an iPod doesn’t. The lower pressure shouldn’t be a major problem, if it’s stored in a pressurized chamber. Another possible culprit could be air humidity, but that shouldn’t be a major problem either. If the space shuttle was not properly isolated, the chill could be a potential problem. Cold actually makes digital electronics work better, all the way to 0 K. But the cold in combination with the heat from the electronics can cause mechanical instabilities in the intergrated circuits. But this is not a problem either, if humans can stay in the shuttle.
So what IS the potential problem for the iPod in space? Radiation! In space there’s a lot of raiation from the sun and other stars. This can interfere with an iPod or other electronics. Something which is as badly shieded as a consumer grade MP3 player, is especially vulnerable to this. But I doubt this is much of a problem either since the shuttle doesn’t leave the atmosphere.
Sorry for the long rant.
No, a good rant I think. Electronics work in vacuums
fine but inside a space shuttle, well the people need to breathe without suites so there’d be oxygen even though that is irrelevant and I think spacecraft are required to be shielded against radiation(humans inside remember).
Btw I’ve heard of computers crashing occasionally because, as the amount of transistors that can be squeezed onto a chip, the delicatness increases againt EMP so when solar wind is particularly strong it can effect memory. I’ll put a URL about this on the forums later.
Whether or not the iPod ran, its completely pointless. Sound needs a medium to travel, so as long as theres a good consistency for it (Closest possible to air) it should work fine
the shuttle, much like an air plain has got its own presure system so that shouldent be a problem.
the reson why i tought the ipod might not work is because of the oxygen, don’t forget that fire needs oxygen to bern, and an ipod has a backlight eletronics ect…
so the space shuttle should be the same as earth but i was thinking in space, space lol would it be chrished??
