Hey people. It has been two weeks since I did my last weekend tutorial, but I’m back and here to tell you how to install windows xp or vista on a Mac, without removing your current Mac operating System.
Now first things first, you will need a copy of Leopard already installed on your pc and you will need the Leopard disk, if you have a family pack disk this will not effect your maximum computer limit. You will also need a copy of Windows XP or Vista and a wired keyboard. You should also back up all your files in case something goes wrong!
Ok, make sure you are logged in as an administrator, go to applications, utilities then open boot camp assistant. You will need to make a partition for Windows; you will need to decide what file system you want to use. Fat 32 means that you can read and write your system files from Mac OSX and means you can have at most 32GB of space on your partition, also you can’t install Vista. NTFS however limits you to only reading the windows files but means you can have a larger partition and you can install windows Vista.
The Best one depends on what operating system you think you will use most. When you have finished partitioning, you will be asked to insert your Windows disk and start the installation. When you have done that, your computer will restart and open into the windows install. You can go through the steps like you would if you normally installed windows…
Make sure that you choose the right hard drive, it will be the one called boot camp, do not install it onto any other or you might install over Mac OSX and that will be BAD. You also need to choose the right format, in vista this is all taken care for but on xp you will need to choose ether fat 32 or NTFS, chose the one that you chose earlier.
After you restart and boot into windows, go to my computer and eject the disk. Then insert your Mac disk. You can now install the Mac OSX Drivers. When all that is done your windows should tell you that there are all kinds of new hardware. You can now install it with ease thanks to your drivers from the Mac CD.
You can ether use Mac OSX or windows on your next boot. You will need to hold down the options button on boot or you will automatically boot to Mac OSX. If you would like this to change then there is an option in the boot camp control panel.
Well that’s this weekend’s tutorial!
Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to email me your problems and requests, my email is brian@wizzhack.co.uk.
